A few safety tips to keep you and your passengers safe.
Advance Planning for a breakdown is the first step toward safety. Some of these suggestions may help avoid a breakdown altogether.
- Perform all regular and recommended maintenance on your vehicle.
- Have your drivers complete a pre-trip checklist at the start of each day, ensuring the vehicle is ready for service.
- Ensure the spare tire has sufficient air.
- Your drivers should have a mobile phone and phone numbers for emergency roadside service (not for use while driving). Access to a GPS is also a great idea.
- Equip the vehicle with an emergency kit. Items to include should be first aid kit, jumper cables, warning triangles, tire repair kit, air pump, a foldup/camping shovel, flashlight, and blanket.
In the event of a breakdown:
- Slow gradually. Carefully steer your vehicle into a breakdown lane. If none is present, get out of traffic to a nearby parking lot, exit ramp, or the far right side of the road. If at night, choose a well-lighted spot.
- Ensure your passengers remain inside with their seatbelt on. Keep doors locked, windows up, and the engine off.
- Call roadside assistance or 911 for help.
- Activate your hazard lights and turn on the dome light if it’s dark outside.
- If you can safely do so, set out warning reflectors behind the vehicle. Exit from the door facing away from traffic and stand a safe distance away. Never stand in front of or behind your vehicle to avoid being hit. Once complete, return to the vehicle and secure your seat belt.
- If another driver offers assistance, roll down your window slightly to let that person know help is on the way.
- Make minor repairs only if completely away from traffic and you’re certain you can safely finish the task.
