Limousine services provide chauffeured vehicles for hire.  Operations vary, but can include transportation services for corporations, such as transporting executives to/from airports, hotels, appointments, and meetings.  Many businesses also serve special events, such as weddings, funerals, celebrity events, promotionals, and funerals.

Livery Insurance Requirements

State requirements vary by type of service provided and vehicle capacity.  Requirements can be from a little as $100,000 liability up to $1,500,000 or more.  However, your limo insurance requirements may differ.  When a business transports people for a fee, a great deal of liability is assumed upon the transportation company for the well being of their passengers.  State limits may not offer sufficient protection.  Although lower limits are available, we recommend at least a $1,000,000 liability limit.

If your business contracts with another entity to provide transportation services, such as third party transportation managers or dispatchers, they will most likely impose livery insurance requirements of their own.  Such contracts often require the other party be named as an additional insured on the limo insurance policy.  This is a common request.  Be sure to inform your insurance agent of any such requirements.

Drive safe.  Protect your business.  Inform us about all your operations so you receive thorough coverage.

Options and Highlights

Price Reduction

Drivers are your limo insurance’s biggest cost driver (pun intended). First, their driving history affects the business’s insureability and rates. Hire poor drivers and rates increase. For example, I once quoted a livery business at $8,000 per year for their business autos, but when motor vehicle records were checked the price jumped to $12,000 per year.

Drivers also influence claims history. Suppose one of your drivers has an at-fault accident that results in a large claim. Your insurance company protects the business and pays the claim. That’s why you carry livery insurance. However, that settlement is now a part of your business’s claims history and will influence pricing for the next few years. So, even if you dismiss the at-fault driver and they no longer work for you, they will influence your premiums for a long time. Please don’t misunderstand – some claims are anticipated. But limo insurance is meant to protect the business from loss. Thus, if claims history begins to look like other claims are in the future, insurance premiums will be adjusted upon renewal to compensate.

How to Reduce Premiums

In summary,

  1. Hire good drivers. Set up a driver hiring program. Obtain motor vehicle records at least yearly. Compare the results to standards set in the program, and act accordingly.
  2. Train your drivers. Ensure they are familiar with the vehicles and the area. Make a ride-along a part of your new driver training. Send them to periodic defensive driving courses.
  3. Maintain your vehicles. Establish a routine maintenance schedule. Provide pre-trip checklists. Ensure issues are addressed quickly.
  4. Obtain a GPS tracking system. Not only will this increase your busienss’s efficiency, but speed and location is easily monitored. No more claims for a driver’s side trip to the grocery store.
  5. Install video cameras. Video recorders have increased in quality and decreased in price immensely within the last few years. Many clients have been saved from frivolous lawsuits and scammers by these systems.
