Oysters, clams, or other live seafood
may be excluded from your insurance.
Certain kinds of seafood are live when sold – oysters and clams top the list. Most standard insurance policies exclude all kinds of “animals”, and oysters/clams fall within that definition. This means should your refrigeration equipment break down, your stock may not be insured. Even if lost in a fire, you may be exposed.
If this is a concern, talk to your insurance agent. Have them show you all places the animals are excluded, and how they added the coverage back in. There are two types of coverage that you need to be comfortable are addressed regarding animals:
- Equipment breakdown/spoilage, and
- Contents/stock – Pay special attention to exclusions on the Cause of Loss forms
