October is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. This event is intended to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and encourage motorists to reduce distractions when they’re behind the wheel. More than 700 people are injured each day as a result of distracted driving crashes. Review these video tips to avoid distractions while you drive—keeping both yourself and others safe on the road.
Put away your phone
Silence your phone and store it out of reach to reduce the temptation to check it while driving.
Plan your trip before you leave
Program your GPS or map application prior to hitting the road to familiarize yourself with the journey and be confident with the route.
Don’t fumble with your playlist
Select a radio station or plug in a predetermined playlist before driving to limit music adjustments behind the wheel.
Secure passengers
Properly situate kids in car seats. Everyone should be safely buckled with seat belts securely fastened. Pets should be kept stationary in the back seat.
Avoid multitasking
Never complete additional tasks, such as eating or personal grooming, while behind the wheel. The road should be your sole focus.
Store possessions appropriately
Store any items in your vehicle securely to keep them from moving during your journey. Refrain from reaching for items that shift as you drive.
Set expectations
Ask everyone riding in your vehicle to remain in their seats, and keep distracting conversations to a minimum.
