Certain contracts to provide non-emergency medical transportation services may require changes to your insurance policies. These commonly come from transportation managers such as Logisticare, MTM, or Southeastrans. They also may be required from businesses for which you transport, such as doctor’s offices, hospitals, retirement homes, or similar.
After entering into a contract to provide non-emergency medical transportation services, our clients often request we add the other party to their policy as an additional insured. Other common requests are to add a waiver of subrogation or a cancellation notice clause. We will handle those two at a later date and focus on additional insured at this time.
Additional Insured
By adding any other entity to your insurance policy as an additional insured, you are providing that party with your insurance coverage. The policy will limit the scope of the protection to include only the liability arising out of your operations in support of the contract. An example may help clarify.
Example: Suppose you contract with a nursing home to transport their clients to and from doctor appointments. If you were in an accident and one of your passengers was injured, it is probable the passenger would sue not only your business but also the nursing home. By adding the nursing home to your policy as an additional insured, your policy protects and defends your business and the nursing home as well.
