Often times our clients enter into contracts that require certain changes to their insurance policies. These commonly come from transportation managers (Logisticare, MTM, UBER) or other businesses for which you provide transportation. Our clients will request one of these parties be added to their policy as an additional insured. Other common requests are to add a waiver of subrogation or a cancellation notice clause. We’ll handle those two at a later date and focus on additional insured at this time.
Additional Insured
By adding anyone to your insurance policy as an additional insured, you are effectively providing that party with your insurance coverage. The policy will limit the scope of the protection to liability that only arises out of your operations. An example may help clarify:
Example: Suppose you contract with an assisted living facility to transport their clients to and from doctor appointments. If you were at fault in an accident and injured a passenger, it is quite feasible that not only you but also the nursing home would be sued for compensation. By adding the nursing home to your policy as an additional insured, your policy not only protects your business, but also the nursing home as well.
Additional insured status is not always beneficial to a transportation provider. Ask your insurance agent.
