Hiring quality, safe drivers is one of the best practices necessary for a profitable transportation business. Your business should have standards for acceptable MVRs. Remember that an accident can affect your insurance rates for years to come, even if you dismiss the responsible driver. Below are suggested minimum standards we would like to share with you:
Basics
- Drivers must have a valid driver’s license issued from the state in which the company operates.
- Drivers must have the proper license classifications, if any. Example: Chauffeur’s license and CDL’s for seating capacities greater than 15 passengers.
- Drivers should have 3 years professional driving experience. Without 3 years’ experience, the minimum driving age should be at least 23.
- Drivers 70 or older should provide a U.S. DOT Medical Examination Report documenting acceptable physical condition.

This easy internal points system will help you further determine driver acceptability. Drivers should not have more than 6 points in the past three years or 4 points in the past twelve months.

- At-Fault accident in past 12 months: 4 points
